In 2018, Gurbaz made his debut for the Afghanistan Under-19 team and immediately made an impact. He scored a match-winning century against Bangladesh in the 2018 Asia Cup and followed it up with another century against India in the same tournament. These performances earned him a call-up to the senior team.
Gurbaz made his debut for the Afghanistan national team in November 2019 in a T20I match against the West Indies. He announced his arrival on the international stage with a blistering 61 off just 47 balls. He continued his good form in the subsequent matches and was named the player of the series in the T20I series against the West Indies.
In his short career so far, Gurbaz has played 16 T20Is for Afghanistan and has scored 516 runs at an impressive average of 34.40 and a strike rate of 138.36. He has already scored four half-centuries and has a highest score of 87 not out.
Gurbaz was picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction for a whopping INR 1.5 crores. He made his IPL debut in April 2021 and impressed one and all with his aggressive batting. In his second match for KKR against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, he scored a brilliant 57 off 44 balls and set the tone for his team's imposing total of 204/7.
